Manager, Environmental Management Unit

The Department of Environment (DoE) invites applications for the position of Manager, Environmental Management Unit. The post holder will join the DoE to manage its Environmental Management Unit and programmes and its environmental assessment functions at the department and national level in accordance with the provisions of the National Conservation Law (2013).

The Manager, Environmental Management Unit will have:

  • A postgraduate qualification or equivalent professional accreditation in a Sustainable Development field, Environmental Sciences/Studies or a discipline related to Environmental Management/Environmental Assessment;
  • Minimum 7 years previous work experience in a relevant role, with 3-4 years at a senior level in the areas of environmental management and sustainable development;
  • Proven experience with Environmental Impact Assessment, Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and Social Impact Assessment (SIA) demonstrating core competencies essential to the environmental assessment profession, including appropriate interdisciplinary training covering both the natural (biophysical) and human (socio-economic) environments;
  • 3-4 years proven team leadership, time management, organisational, administrative and personnel management skills;
  • A strong theoretical background in the principles behind sustainable development and international agendas related thereto as well as international and regional environmental agreements which have been extended to the Cayman Islands (e.g. Ramsar, Biodiversity, and Climate Change Conventions, etc.);
  • Working knowledge of sustainability issues, environmental and planning legislation and policy, and institutional structures related to environmental management and development control in the Cayman Islands;
  • Excellent written communication skills and strong inter-personal and public speaking skills;

In addition, the Manager, Environmental Management Unit, must be able to demonstrate:

  • Strong research and analytical aptitude;
  • Proficiency in efficiently and effectively managing multiple and varied projects within targets, and preparing reports or other work at short notice or within tight deadlines;
  • Experience in the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) software (e.g. ArcGIS);
  • Experience with public consultation, engagement and speaking.
