CAYMAN ISLANDS GOVERNMENT

The Cayman Islands Government is currently inviting applications for the following post within the Law Reform Commission:

Senior Legislative Counsel (Law Reform)

In conjunction with the Director, the Senior Legislative Counsel will be responsible for reviewing the laws of the Cayman Islands with a view to their systematic development and reform. This will include the modification, elimination, repeal, simplification and modernization of current laws, as well as the development of new areas of legislation.

The Senior Legislative Counsel will formulate policy, conduct proactive and reactive research, prepare scoping papers, issues papers, discussion papers and develop final reports on matters reviewed by the Law Reform Commission. They will also be required to contribute to consultative meetings (with representatives of the private sector, Ministers and Senior Civil Servants) and draft clear, unambiguous and relevant legislation (both primary and secondary).

Applicant must:

  • be a qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Attorney-at-Law in a Commonwealth jurisdiction;
  • possess a diploma or Master of Laws in legislative drafting;
  • have an ability to undertake deep research;
  • have an ability to draft major and complex legislation and other legal documents;
  • be able to demonstrate accurate use of the English language;
  • have an ability to assimilate complex facts quickly; and
  • be able to exercise sound judgement.

Applicants must have:

  • at least seven (7) years of post-graduate experience, five (5) of which must have been spent in a law reform or legislative drafting office of a Government Department, Statutory Authority or other public body; and
  • relevant experience in formulating policy, conducting research, writing consultation papers, developing recommendations for law reform and drafting relevant legislation.
