The Department of Planning invite applicants for the following post:

Planning Assistant I (Policy & Development)

The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with research, reviewing, redrafting and implementing of a Development Plan, with the ultimate goal of providing the Cayman Islands with comprehensive long range Land Planning Service.

This post will be involved with extensive research, policy review and development, maintaining and updating the Plan along with ensuring public outreach.

Key Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Drafting in consultation with the Assistant Director, a work programme and implementation schedule for the Development Plan;
  • Evaluating goals, objectives and alternative policies and drafting of the plan documents, along with the preparation of public meetings and collection of data required for the plan;
  • Providing policy advice to the Director of Planning and the Ministry regarding the Plan and sustainable development;
  • Conducting research (of successful examples from other jurisdictions) and compiling data into reports to draft supporting documentation for plan;
  • Reviewing existing Government plans and policy to ensure its plans are not contradictory;
  • In consultation with the Assistant Director, Drafting and implementing, a Public Outreach program for the sustainable Development plan, to raise awareness and educate the public;
  • Providing general assistance with day to day activities relating to the Plan including Graphic preparation and map preparation. Scheduling weekly meetings to provide progress reports to the Director as needed;
  • Serve as the first point of contact to the public to answer inquiries on the new plan.

Qualifications, Experience & Knowledge:

Applicants must possess, at a minimum, the following:

A Bachelor's Degree in Urban Planning or a closely related field with a minimum of five (5) years’ experience; specially in a Planning Office dealing with Project Management and the development of comprehensive plans.

The post holder must have a strong background in plan formulation and public consultation, as well as a good general knowledge of the theories, principles, capital improvement planning and concepts of Land Use Management and Sustainable Development. Experience preparing and implementing work plans, particularly those for the preparation of comprehensive plans, is essential.

Knowledge and experience in the use of computer databases and graphical representation of key concepts and principles are essential.

  • Excellent time management skills and organisation skills, with an ability to work within limited and ‘short-notice’ time frames.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license.
