The Department of Planning invite applicants for the following post:

Building Inspections Supervisor

The successful candidate will plan, manage, monitor, evaluate and report on the use of human resources, materials and equipment by ensuring that inspectors are responding to inspection requests and conducting inspections in a timely and professional manner. The post holder will also be responsible for generally assisting the Deputy Director (BC) of Planning with the efficient and effective functioning of the Building Control Section.

Other responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Supervising the daily operations of building inspectors;
  • Confer with and provide information to industry partners and other stakeholders regarding code requirements and alternatives;
  • Produce output reports as necessary (weekly/biweekly/quarterly) for management purposes;
  • Review existing systems, training provisions and processes continually in order to recommend changes that will continually improve the day to day operations of inspectors;

Qualifications, Knowledge, Experience & Skills:

Applicants must possess one of the following qualifications along with a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in performing inspections in the following disciplines: Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical and/or Fire. Three of those years must include supervisory experience in a construction management position or similar.

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Architecture, or related subject; five years general construction, engineering, architecture or related experience; building inspector certification and certification from a recognized code organization in the following disciplines; Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical and/or Fire;

OR

  • An Associate’s degree in construction technology or related subject; seven years general construction, engineering, architecture or related experience; building inspector certification and certification from a recognized code organization in the following disciplines: Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical and/or Fire;
  • Must possess International Code Council (ICC) or equivalent certifications as Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical and/or Fire Inspector;
  • Must have knowledge and understand of the principles and practices of the construction industry with ability to collect and analyze data and prepare reports including trend analysis;
  • Understand and interpret the adopted technical codes, local statutes and technical drawings;
  • Must have knowledge of MS Office suite of products, primarily: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook;
  • Must have strong communication skills; verbal, written, with ability to respond professionally and effectively with persons throughout government and private sector, including high-level officials;
