TRAINEE PROBATION OFFICER

The DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY REHABILITATION role is to contribute to the publicís safety by providing a professional service to offenders; supporting and encouraging them to become productive, contributing members of the community. Probation Officers assess, supervise, train, counsel and advocate for offenders after convictions, incarceration and/or non-custodial sentences, identifying needs and interventions that will enable them to avoid further reoffending.

Probation Officers work both in the community and in the prison system to interact with offenders. They work collaboratively with the courts, the Conditional Release Board and other public safety partners to maximize the network of support services available to offenders. Probation Officers provide recommendations to partner agencies and bodies based on risk, need and compliance in order to achieve the desired outcomes, make the community safer by promoting rehabilitation of offenders.

Probation Officers are caring individuals with a positive, yet pragmatic regard for offenders. They are firm, fair, respectful and patient. Probation Officers are expected to demonstrate sound, informed judgement and be of such moral character that they are above reproach. Because their recommendations are highly regarded by partner agencies, Probation Officers must be analytical and have a high degree of objectivity. As much of a Probation Officerís role is in written documentation, strong communication skills, in particular excellent writing skills are essential.

Probation Officer Role and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and monitor offenders both in the community and in prisons
  • Prepare and present comprehensive reports for offenders under their supervision
  • Liaise with partner agencies and organizations for opportunities for intervention and resources for offenders
  • Develop and implement rehabilitation plans and programmes for offenders based on assessed needs
  • Facilitate group training and workshops for offenders that meet the needs of the offender
  • Attend forums, case conferences or meetings in order to facilitate best outcomes for offenders

Required Education, Experience and Competencies:

  • At minimum, a Bachelor Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Criminology, Criminal Justice or related discipline from an accredited university
  • Practice experience in Criminal Justice System as a part of tertiary education requirements. Post-graduate work experience is advantageous but not required.
