On behalf of the Department of Planning we invite applicants for the following vacancy:

Combination Fire Plans Examiner / Inspector

The successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing and inspecting submitted Fire Protection drawings/systems, fire sprinkler (including fire pumps) and fire alarm plans for new and existing buildings (commercial/industrial and residential projects) to determine if requirements of the International Fire Code (IFC), International Building Code (IBC), and other Codes and Standards have been met.

Other responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Identifying requirements for fire protection systems (Sprinkler, Fire Alarms, and Fire Pumps) and permits. Projects include Residential, Commercial, Fit Outs and Renovated projects.
  • Verifying Code compliance to protect against hazards of specified occupancies and use;
  • Verifying that special fire protection features, i.e. fire-resistive materials / surface treatments, and clearance of combustibles surrounding buildings are specified where required;
  • Verifying that storage, use and handling of flammable / combustible liquids /gases are specified and complies with code requirements;
  • Verifying emergency and standby power is provided for systems egress and occupant safety;
  • Conducting site inspections of Fire Protection systems, Fire Sprinklers and Fire Alarm Systems to ensure standards of construction and component installations are safe, in compliance with the relevant codes;

Qualifications, Experience & Skills:

  • Associate’s Degree in Construction technology or related field with a minimum of seven (7) years progressive, responsible experience in the field of fire prevention and inspections, along with experience in plan review of fire-protection systems OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Fire Protection Engineering would be desirable with five (5) years progressive experience.

Note: A more mature candidate, holding a High School Diploma, with relevant certifications (see below) and a minimum of ten (10) – fifteen (15) years’ progressive experience in the area, will also be considered.

  • Must possess ICC, NFPA or equal as: Fire Inspector I, Fire Inspector II, and Fire Plans Examiner.
  • Proven competencies to acquire ICC Commercial Building Inspector and Building Plans Examiner, within one (1) year of employment.
  • Knowledgeable in the 2009 or later ICC - IBC, IFC , IMC, Also, NFPA 13, 13R, 14, 20, 70 (NEC), 72, 96 referenced in the IBC and IFC.
  • Ability to accurately read / comprehend construction drawings;
  • Strong communication proficiency including - verbal, written and listening skills. Facilitating detailed plan review/inspection reports.
