Public Education and Outreach Officer

The Department of Environment invites applications for the position of Public Education and Outreach Officer. The post holder will join the Legislation Implementation and Coordination Unit to promote, generate and maintain a high level of public awareness both inside and outside of Government regarding all aspects of the activities of the Department of Environment and the National Conservation Council.

The Public Education and Outreach Officer will have:

  • At a minimum, a Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Public Relations, Marketing, Communications or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years post-graduation experience working in the relevant fields of public relations, marketing and communication. Experience in conservation, environment or science related organisations preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, with the ability to condense, simplify and convey complex information to a variety of audiences.

In addition, the following will prove advantageous to the successful candidate:

  • Demonstrated competence in managing a range of social media platforms and applications.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office, including but not limited to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Publisher.
  • Working knowledge of website design and maintenance.
  • Creative and dynamic approach to marketing environmental messages and range of artistic skills including photographic and video experience.
  • Good organizational, time management and project management skills and experience.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills, a dynamic team member, have high ethical standards and display a flexible approach to work.
  • Familiarity with the environment, history, infrastructure and culture of the Cayman Islands.
  • Working knowledge and experience of using GIS systems, and in particular the Cayman Islands Land Information System.

The post holder will be primarily based in an office environment. The majority of work will be computer related activities. There will be occasional opportunities for “field work” in marine and terrestrial natural environments, or in urban settings, e.g., conducting public surveys, on all three islands. The post may call for working irregular hours (i.e. to be flexible), including nights (e.g., for public consultation meetings), occasionally on public holidays and weekends. Local travel is frequent, both within Grand Cayman and to the Sister Islands, on behalf of or representing the Department of Environment or National Conservation Council. International travel is unlikely.
