Cayman Islands Government

Using Your Right to Know

Sunshine Week kicks off on Monday, 29 September.

With only three months remaining until implementation of Cayman's Freedom of Information (FOI) Law, the FOI Unit has put together a weeklong programme to teach people how to use their new right to information.

With the focus on public awareness, the second annual Sunshine Week kicks off with a Government Open Day at the Government Administration Building on Monday, 29 September.

There, the FOI Unit will launch a FOI Law user guide -a colourful guide to understanding the FOI Law -- plus the event will feature many government agency booths to give the public an inside look at what government does. And on the following day, the FOI Unit will visit Cayman Brac with the same message.

"This year's Sunshine Week is especially significant as we aim to prepare the public for when the FOI Law comes into force next January. We need to ensure that people know how to use the FOI Law and their rights and responsibilities," said FOI Coordinator Carole Excell.

Another key event will be the meet-and-greet reception at which the public will be introduced to government's information managers. Starting at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, 1 October, everyone is invited to attend.

"We decided to showcase the information managers as they are going to be the frontline for the FOI Law," said Mrs Excell. "I encourage everyone to come out and use this unique opportunity to get to know these officials. The FOI Unit will also give a short presentation on how to access one's rights under the new law."

Younger residents have also had an opportunity to give their input. Winners of an essay competition entitled: How will the Freedom of Information Law benefit the Cayman Islands? will be announced during Sunshine Week. They will also be rewarded with a visit to Government House where they will meet HE the Governor, Stuart Jack.

Sunshine Week 2008 concludes with a Freedom Fun Run/Walk/Ride from The Wharf Restaurant to Seven Mile Beach. Admission is free and registration starts at The Wharf at 6:00 am, while the event actually starts at 7:00 am.
