Get Ready - It's Hurricane Season!

The HSA's disaster van.

Hurricane season is underway and it is time to get prepared. So whether you are a new resident or just want to refresh you readiness skills, tune in this week for tips on how to protect life and property before, during and after a disaster.

Shutting down services at a hospital is never an option, which is why the Health Services Authority (HSA) spends many hours preparing for emergencies. Follow us behind the scenes to see where generators are tested, systems checked and medical, dietary and other supplies stockpiled. Check out the hospital's disaster relief mobile unit, which can be set up for triage anywhere on-island.

Be there as host Heather Hopson interviews HSA Medical Director Dr Greg Hoeksema and other top officials about the hospital's hurricane plan and how it has been strengthened since Ivan.

There's advice for pregnant women and for critical care patients, plus we tell you which hurricane shelters will have medical staff on hand for those having specific medical needs.

Planning on going to a shelter in case of a storm? Why not sign up as a shelter volunteer or manager. Listen in as we tell you what it takes to serve during a disaster and what training you can expect.

Finally, hear about the basic supplies you absolutely must have, as we shop with the Department of Environmental Health to discover how to create an emergency kit suited to all budgets.

Produced by Government Information Services, GIS Spotlight highlights government's services and solutions regarding issues that concern and affect you.
