Brac Basketball Camp Thrives
Young basketball players in Cayman Brac were treated this summer to yet another successful basketball camp.
Led by Technical Director Victor O'Garo and National Basketball Coach Daniel Augustine, the camp was held at the Cayman Brac High School 11-14 August.
Twenty-seven children ages 6-18 attended the week-long camp between 8:30 a.m. and noon. The training was free and the young participants also received a mid-morning snack.
Several technical skills were learnt, from ball-handling and dribbling, to passing, shooting and defence, to small-sided games.
"The children understood the basics of the game very well. However, later on we would like to spend more time with them so they can learn more about the team concept," said Mr. O'Garo. "Meanwhile, we hope that they will continue to practice what they learnt during the week."
On the final day of camp, the Hon. Minister of District Administration, Works & Gender Affairs the Hon. Juliana O'Connor-Conolly JP, chatted with the children and coaches, took photographs and observed the training.
"Both the coaching staff and the participants enjoyed the Minister's presence and words of encouragement," said Sports Instructor Mitchum Sanford. "We appreciated her taking time from her busy schedule to be with us."
Coach Augustine shared his satisfaction with the camp. "Cayman Brac is a small community with only a small basketball contingent. But after coming here for six years, we are pleased with what Mr. Sanford has done. We're definitely looking forward to returning next year."
The Ministry of District Administration, Works & Gender Affairs has two more camps organized for Cayman Brac. The football camp takes place 17-21 August at the field on the Bluff between 8:30 a.m. and noon. The swimming camp will be held 24-28 August at the government pool.
