Seniors Honoured

Happy, Healthy Seniors: Creating a Society for all Ages is the 2009 theme for October's Older Persons Month.

The month, which begins with the United Nations designated International Day of Older Persons (Thursday, 1 October), features a series of events to honour the country's seniors spearheaded by the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS).

DCFS Director Deanna Look Loy said the theme was selected by the Cayman Islands to bring attention to the fact that older persons have much to contribute to the community.

"There are many seniors who continue to make a difference through work in their churches; volunteering in education; in health and other spheres of life," Mrs. Look Loy said.

Unfortunately, she observed, there is a tendency to marginalise seniors as they lose some of the abilities they had when they were younger.

"There are many who think that seniors can no longer make a difference or have an impact and as such they do not include them in activities or in any kind of decision-making," she said.

Another issue Mrs. Look Loy pointed to was the need for persons to show more care for the welfare of older persons in their communities and families.

"Like all of us, and even more so, many older persons want to know that there is someone who cares for them and is looking after their welfare. Sadly, in some cases, rather than looking out for them, some take advantage," Mrs. Look Loy said.

Many of the indigent who are assisted by DCFS are older persons, she said.

"This month we want to remind persons of how much these seniors have already contributed to our community and how much more they have to give. We also want to ask persons to show care and make our seniors feel like they are a valuable part of the community and the family," she said.
