Internat'l Day for Persons with Disabilities

The United Nations' International Day for Persons with Disabilities is tomorrow, Thursday, 3 December.

This year's theme is Making the Millennium Development Goals Inclusive: Empowerment of persons with disabilities and their communities around the world.

Although the UN has designated only a single day to celebrate persons with disabilities, the Ministry of Education, Training and Employment and the Planning the Future for Persons with Disabilities in the Cayman Islands Steering Committee felt it important to extend this celebration to this entire week.

Many of you may have already seen some of the public relations initiatives already underway such as the appearances of the Hon. Rolston Anglin, Minister of Education and Chief Officer Mrs. Mary Rodrigues on Monday morning's Daybreak.

Or perhaps you attended the celebratory church service at Savannah United Church last Sunday, which honoured persons with disabilities in our community.

The remaining events for Disabilities Week are:

  • Thursday 3rd December: 7am Daybreak: Day in the life of persons with disabilities

  • Thursday 3rd December: 7:30pm - Island 24 - GIS Spotlight: We Are Able!

  • Thursday 3rd December: International Day for Persons with Disabilities; message from Minister Anglin (disseminated via print & electronic media)

  • Thursday 3rd December: Assemblies/Activities in schools to be all about persons with disabilities.

  • Thursday 3rd December: Open Day at Lighthouse School

    • 9:00am - 12:00pm - Hourly school tours led by parents and students

    • 9:00am - 12:00pm Christmas arts and craft activities

    • 12:00pm - 1:00pm Parents and friends invited to have lunch with students

    • 1:45pm - 2:30pm "Read with me" - Visitors invited to spend 15 minutes listening to students read

  • Thursday 3rd December: Sunrise & Rotaract Blue: Celebration with Clients & Christmas Decorating Party, Time: 12:00pm - 2:00pm

These initiatives are taking place to inform the public of issues faced by persons with disabilities in our community and to advise that the Ministry of Education and the Steering Committee are working together to improve the overall rights of persons with disabilities in the Cayman Islands.

By creating public awareness, engaging public involvement and changing negative attitudes towards persons with disabilities, we can ensure better futures for our intellectually and physically challenged.

To this end, information pamphlets will be distributed to relevant organisations, hospitals and businesses this week, providing additional details concerning ongoing work for persons with disabilities.

As human beings, they should be treated with the same respect and dignity as all others in our society. You are encouraged to get involved in this important cause and help to make Cayman a better place for our persons with disabilities.

And if you haven't already had the chance, the Ministry of Education and the Steering Committee for Persons with Disabilities encourages everyone to listen, watch and participate however you can.

For pamphlets or additional information, contact Ms Kimberly Huggins at the Ministry of Education, 244-2417.
