Premier Chairs Cabinet
For the first time ever today, Tuesday, 1 December 2009, a Caymanian elected official, the Premier, Hon. McKeeva Bush, OBE, JP, has chaired a meeting of Cabinet.
Commenting on the experience, Mr Bush said: "Given the many outstanding politicians who have led our country since the introduction of constitutional government, I am honoured and humbled to have made history in this fashion.
"The new Constitution allows Caymanians to assume a more visible leadership role at the country's helm, even as it encourages us to assume greater accountability for our actions. This can only be a positive thing for us as a people."
Previously the Caymanian head of the civil service, known as the Deputy Governor, acted as Governor when that post-holder was absent from the Islands, and chaired Cabinet in that capacity.
Presently, under section 46 (1) and (2) of the new Constitution, which took effect on November 6, 2009, the Premier chairs Cabinet meetings in the absence of the Governor.
