New Governor Sworn In
His Excellency the Governor Mr. Duncan Taylor, CBE was sworn in at the Legislative Assembly this afternoon (Friday, 15 January).
At 2 p.m. Mr. Taylor received a General Salute from a Royal Cayman Islands Police Service Honour Guard, and then processed into the Assembly with other dignitaries, including the Honourable Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Mrs. Mary Lawrence, His Excellency the Acting Governor Mr. Donovan Ebanks, MBE, the Honourable Premier Mr. McKeeva Bush, OBE, JP and the Honourable Leader of the Opposition Mr. Kurt Tibbetts.
Following a prayer and the singing of the National Anthem, His Excellency the Acting Governor Mr. Donovan Ebanks read the Warrant of Appointment.
The Chief Justice, Honourable Anthony Smellie, QC, JP administered the Oaths of Office, and His Excellency the Governor Mr. Duncan Taylor, CBE began his three-year appointment as Governor of the Cayman Islands.
Welcome addresses were delivered by the Premier and the Honourable Deputy Governor Mr. Donovan Ebanks. Mr. Taylor then responded with a brief speech.
The ceremony ended with flowers being presented to Mrs. Marie-Beatrice Taylor and the singing of the National Song.
Following the procession His Excellency the Governor received his first Royal Salute (a 17 Gun Salute). After inspecting the Guard of Honour he received his second Royal Salute.
The Taylors arrived on a Cayman Airways flight from Miami earlier in the afternoon, and were greeted at the airport by Acting Governor, the Hon. Donovan Ebanks, MBE; the Hon. Premier, Mr. McKeeva Bush, OBE, JP; and other senior officials.
The family then spent a little time at Government House before the swearing-in ceremony.
The new First Family will be guests of honour at this evening's public welcome reception to be held at Pedro St. James, beginning at 6 p.m.
