Fear is no Obstacle

Mrs. Gloria Myles' appointment as the Treasury Department's Deputy Accountant General took effect 1 April.

Recently-appointed Deputy Accountant General Gloria Myles lives by her personal motto: "Face the fear and do it anyway."

Afraid of failure during childhood, she says this motto has kept her going throughout her personal and professional life.

"I've come to realise that failure is not always the worst thing," she said. "Instead, whenever I don't succeed, I regard it as an opportunity to learn and grow."

Acting in the same capacity in the Cayman Islands Treasury Department since September 2009, her formal appointment became effective on 1 April.

Her role gives her responsibility for the overall management and supervision of several Treasury functions, including financial reporting for core government and the public sector, as well as cash and borrowing management. She'll also provide financial advice and support to all government ministries, portfolios and departments.

A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with an honours degree in accounting from the International College of the Cayman Islands, Mrs. Myles says she's always been a natural with numbers.

Starting out as a dishwasher with the Galleon Beach Hotel when she was just 13, she was soon promoted to cashier. A career in Cayman's financial services industry followed, managing mutual funds. Then some seven years ago she joined the civil service as manager for the Cash Management Unit.

Her limited free time is taken up with her three granddaughters, her garden, a John Grisham novel or an interior decorating project. She's married to Edlin Myles and they have two sons, Deon and Jerune.

The Treasury Department operates under the Ministry of Finance, Tourism and Development (Public Finance).
