May is Child Month

Some participants from the Child Month Celebrity Reading Day event, which took place on Tuesday, 3 May, at pre-schools across the Cayman Islands.

Hands Across Time is the Department of Children and Family Services theme for this year's Child Month observance.

Celebrated throughout May, the schedule of activities will include an art trek, 5k walk/run, a parent information seminar and a youth talent expo.

This year, the focus is on exposing parents to available agencies and resources; celebrating children's talents and achievements; encouraging parents and adults to participate in meaningful fun activities with children, and acknowledging children's achievements in education, sports and more.

Yesterday (Tuesday, 3 May) also saw the introduction of a new feature, Celebrity Reading Day, during which local celebrities visited pre-schools and child-care centres to read with children and donate books to their libraries.

Noting that all books for the occasion were donated by Mary Adam of Hobbies and Books, Child Month Planning Committee Chair Cassandra Parchment said, "We are grateful for her support and for her promotion of early literacy in our preschoolers."

The list of participating local celebrities included HE the Governor, Mr. Duncan Taylor, CBE; Speaker of the House Mary Lawrence; Cayman27's Donna Bush; YCLA recipient Collin Anglin; Miss Teen Cayman Leanne Ritch; and Miss Cayman Cristin Alexander.
