Appeal Court Judge Retires

The Hon. Chief Justice, Mr. Justice Anthony Smellie (l) was the first among speakers who showered praise on retiring Court of Appeal Judge, the Hon. Ian Forte (r).

Judges and lawyers bid a warm farewell in Grand Court to retiring Cayman Islands Appeal Court Judge, The Hon. Mr. Justice Ian Xavier Forte, OJ, CD, whose legal career spans 51 years.

The Hon. Chief Justice, Mr. Anthony Smellie, QC, led a group who appreciated Mr. Forte's professionalism, judicial independence, impartiality, integrity and unfailing courtesy as attributes that contributed to his measured and calm approach from the bench.

Mr. Smellie also recalled Mr. Forte's long association with Cayman, starting when the Islands and Jamaica were still jointly ruled by Britain, and acknowledged the "great debt" owed him for his contributions to Cayman's legal system.

The speakers comprised Appeal Court President, The Rt. Hon. Sir John Chadwick,QC; Director of Public Prosecutions, Ms. Cheryll Richards, QC; barrister Mr. Neil Timms, QC (on behalf of the CI Bar Association and the CI Law Society) and attorney Mr. David McGrath (on behalf of the Criminal Defence Bar).

In reply, Mr. Forte said his time in Cayman would remain memorable as a great experience.

Mr. Forte and his wife, Jamaican Minister of State (of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade) and Senator, the Hon. Marlene Malahoo Forte, shared memories and experiences with judges, court staff and attorneys at a reception that followed.
