Lauding the voluntary members for their civic mindedness, the Premier, the Hon. W. McKeeva Bush, OBE, JP, received the 1999 White Paper Review Committee's public consultation report this afternoon from Committee chairman, Mr. Lemuel Hurlston, CVO, MBE, JP.
The committee the Premier set up was part of an ongoing broader public consultation exercise launched by the UK, which is slated to culminate in a new White Paper for its Overseas Territories (OTs) next year. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office launched consultation exercise continues until 31 December 2011.
The Premier praised committee members for their hard work to accomplish in six weeks the tasks he set them which were to consult with the people, collate the data and produce the report highlighting UK-Cayman Islands' relations.
Mr. Bush said he would present a copy of the report to the UK Overseas Territories Minister, Mr. Henry Bellingham and make presentations to his colleagues at the Overseas Territories Consultative Council meeting on 23 and 24 November in London.
Noting the aim of the exercise is to improve and strengthen Cayman's relationship with the UK, Mr. Bush signalled Cayman's willingness to change in areas that need it including procurement. "However, we are not going to sit still or be taken advantage of," Mr. Bush said.
Following the Premier tabling the report in the House this afternoon, it is being released to the public, Mr. Hurlston said.
Cabinet Secretary Mr. Orrett Connor, MBE, JP told the committee that his understanding was no other territory had undertaken to produce a report. He also noted the document is not political but reflects the people's views.
