The celebration of National Heroes Day 2012 began today (Saturday, 21 January) with a lunch honouring Cayman’s education pioneers.

With over 75 names, the list of honourees was almost equally divided between those who were present and those who had passed on but who were represented by family members.

All branches of education were acknowledged, with pioneers being recognised from preschool, primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. Special education pioneers were also among the honourees, and teachers at both government and private school were included.

Hosted at the Marriott Beach Resort by the Ministry of Education, Training and Employment, the event featured speeches from the Minister, the Hon. Rolston Anglin, JP and the Premier, the Hon. McKeeva Bush, OBE, JP.

Hon. McKeeva Bush, OBE, JP. stated “ Look at where we have come from and how much we have achieved over the past several decades of building our education system.” He continued to state to the crowd of attendees, “Our islands were founded upon the seas but our education was built by our pioneers. Those who are with us and those who have passed on; We thank you for your dedication and hard work”

Chief Officer in the Ministry of Education, Training and Employment, Mrs. Mary Rodrigues welcomed her fellow nominees and their guests. Educator and honouree Mr. Herbert Crawford offered the blessing and Mainstream provided music.
