One Man, One Vote

Premier McKeeva Bush announced on 24 February 2012 that the United Democratic Party Government will hold a referendum on ‘one man, one vote’ at the May 2013 general election.

This is a previously stated position of the UDP Government. Premier Bush said that the benefits of holding the referendum as part of the general election next year includes avoiding duplicate costs at a time when there is tremendous pressure on public finances; if passed, a 2013 referendum allows for an orderly implementation of ‘one man, one vote’; and furthermore the call to have such a referendum this year obviously does not have the support of the Leader of the Opposition given his comments as published in the Caymanian Compass newspaper of 17 February 2012.
