CI Flag Flies High
The UK Member of Parliament (MP) who successfully lobbied to get British Overseas Territories' flags due recognition in the UK was recognised for his efforts, on the steps of the Legislative Assembly (LA) on Wednesday (4 April, 2012).
Premier Hon. McKeeva Bush, OBE, JP presented a Cayman Islands national flag to Chairman of the Overseas Territories All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG), Mr. Andrew Rosindell Esq., along with Chairman of the Cayman Islands APPG, Mr. Graham Brady Esq., and Vice Chairman of the Cayman Islands APPG, Mr. Brian Donohoe Esq.
Mr. Bush explained Mr. Rosindell had lobbied for a number of years and succeeded in getting the UK Government to feature British Overseas Territories' flags in a similar manner to Commonwealth countries' flags on state occasions and certain state venues. These include the Queen's Birthday Parade and the Trooping of the Colours, as well as at UK's Parliament Square, the Horse Guards and other places where Commonwealth flags are flown.
Expressing happiness at the outcome of his efforts, Mr. Rosindell said the OTs justly deserved such recognition, which was long overdue.
Also receiving a flag, Mr. Donohoe thanked the Premier and the people of the Islands for the hospitality the MPs received during their visit.
The Speaker, Hon. Mary Lawrence, MBE, JP; Deputy Governor Hon. Franz Manderson, Cert. Hon., JP; Deputy Premier Hon. Julianna O'Connor Connolly, JP; Cabinet Ministers Hon. Rolston Anglin, JP; Hon. Michael Adam, MBE, JP; Hon. Mark Scotland, JP; Deputy Speaker Mr. Cline Glidden Jr.; MLAs Capt. Eugene Ebanks, JP; Mr. Dwayne Seymour and Mr. Ellio Solomon attended the brief ceremony.
Earlier, the three visiting MPs, and Director of the Cayman Islands London Office, Rt. Hon. Lord Blencathra, met with the Speaker, toured the LA, and held discussions with the Government, Opposition and Independent MLAs.
Along with His Excellency, the Governor, Mr. Duncan Taylor, CBE, they also participated in the oath taking by the Deputy Governor, Hon. Franz Manderson, Cert. Hon, JP, as the new ex-officio Member of the LA for Internal and External Affairs, and the Civil Service.
