Demolition paves the way for Scouts HQ

The Cayman Islands Scouts Association is one step closer to establishing a permanent home.

On Saturday, September 15, 2012, Scouts and volunteers turned out to watch the demolition of the building in Middle Road, George Town, near Chrissie Tomlinson Memorial Hospital, where the new headquarters will stand.

Some 300 boys and young men, aged from six to 20 years, are presently enrolled as Scouts. The organisation, which occupies a trailer in Prospect, has raised some KYD 400,000 towards the new building through appeals to former scouts and the parents of scouts. It is seeking about KYD 550,000 to finish the project.

Previously the building on Middle Road served as a group home for the Department of Children and Family Services, and has also housed various public sector administrative offices, including the Scout office at one time. It was severely damaged by Hurricane Ivan in 2004 after which it fell out of use.
