Changes to parcel inspections

Parcels entering the Cayman Islands from Monday 2 September 2013 will go through a more customer-friendly checking procedure.

As of that date, parcels arriving through the Post Office will be processed and assessed by a Customs Officer in the presence of a Postal Services worker. This new method will allow the Customs Department to assess duty based on the invoice or to open an item, if deemed necessary, without the customer being present. In cases where an invoice has not been included in the package, customer may submit it ahead of time via email to parcelpost@gov.ky to minimise delays.

Accordingly, the customer will not, in most cases, be required to come into the Airport Post Office (APO) and wait in line to have a parcel assessed. It is similar to the process Customs uses for assessing packages imported by Courier Services such as FedEx and DHL.

Once the parcel is assessed the duty information will then be entered in the Parcel system, and a notice requesting the customer to come to the APO to collect the item will be generated. The notice will include the total amount due, including duty and fees.

Customers can then bring that notice to the APO and pay the stipulated amount and collect the parcel. This should significantly reduce waiting times.

If the customer wishes to challenge/dispute the amount assessed, a Customs Officer will be available at the APO from 11.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. The H.M Customs Department is open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday-Friday and Saturday 8:30am to 12:30p.m.
