Get a Taste of India
India is a country of such unexpected similarities and yet such vast differences from our own small islands here in the Caribbean. If you have always been curious to discover more about India, or your heart is already there and you long for a return visit, save yourself the plane fare and come to this season’s Cine Club showings at the National Gallery!
The National Gallery samples some of the finest that Indian filmmakers have to offer, with six exceptional films being screened. India’s Bollywood film industry is an excellent ambassador for the country – Indian film has been around for over 100 years, and currently over 2,100 feature films are produced there each year, which circulate all over the world! Lise Hurlstone, this season’s guest curator, says, “for Cine Club we try to show films that you would not normally get to see at the cinema, or may not have heard of, but that are also accessible and fun for a general audience. It is a chance to add a different sort of activity to your social calendar!”
The first session of Cine Club will be an India-themed event with Indian-inspired cocktails (or soft drinks) and light snacks to add to the experience of the first film. There will also be a short introductory talk giving some interesting insights into this season’s movies. Ms Hurlstone explains, “this season will be really exciting as Indian cinema offers so much variety for all tastes. Indian cinema produces really unique and high-quality films that we often don’t hear about unless we seek them out. There is such a rich history of visual culture and performance from India, you cannot help but be drawn in to the images on the screen. These films are a nice introduction for anyone who is curious about Bollywood and other types of films from India”.
The season will feature a wide variety of Indian cinema, starting out with the highest grossing comedy ever in India – 3 Idiots – focusing on the lives and antics of a group of engineering students. Join us at the National Gallery for A Passage Through India, and through these movies experience Indian classical dance performers, quiz master chai wallahs, and the drama of an Indian wedding.
Films are screened every other Monday evening at 7:00 PM at the National Gallery Dart Auditorium. Cine Club membership gives you access to this season’s six meetings, refreshments, film hand-outs and member discussions after each film screening. Membership is $50 for six meetings or $10 per movie (drop-in fee). A reduced rate is available for National Gallery members. Special Saturday Cine Club Event
To celebrate the start of the National Gallery’s new Cine Club season, NGCI will host a free screening of the popular film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011) on Saturday, 26 April at 11:00 AM. Join a group of British retirees as they travel to India, enticed by advertisements for the luxury of the ‘Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’. But while their new home is far less luxurious than imaged, their lives are forever transformed.
This comedy-drama features a great ensemble cast including Judi Dench (GoldenEye, Mrs Brown), Maggie Smith (Sister Act, Harry Potter films), Bill Nighy (Love Actually, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End), and Celia Imrie (Bridget Jones’s Diary, Nanny McPhee).
