Child Month in May
Opening Our Hearts is the theme of the 19th annual observance of Child Month this May.
To raise awareness of the important role the community has in making the Cayman Islands a better place for all children, the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) has partnered with the Ministry of Community Affairs, Youth & Sports and other organisations to plan a month of educational sessions and public events that all families will enjoy.
These activities range from readings to yoga, along with educational sessions on child literacy, spiritual development, child abduction, child protection, foster care and more.
Encouraging national participation, Minister for Community Affairs, Youth & Sports, Hon. Osbourne Bodden said, “As a society we all need to take part in protecting our children, but also in showing them how much they are valued. This is the best thing that our community can do to ensure a successful future.”
DCFS’s Child Month Coordinator, Delmira Bodden states that, “The annual celebration aims to create awareness as we continue to encourage every resident to ensure that every child has a good quality of life – and this year’s theme will help us do just that.”
New to the annual Child Month agenda this year are cooking demonstrations on healthy snacks on 9 May, Kirk Office’s Colourthon on 23 May, a family yoga evening on 25 May, and a foster care orientation on 28 May for persons interested in becoming foster parents.
