New ACC Appointed

New Assistant Collector of Customs, Mr. Philip West

Senior Customs Officer of the Year in 2014 Mr. Philip West has been promoted to Assistant Collector of Customs.

Over 24 years in in the department, Mr. West has proven his worth in a number of areas, including continually training juniors as a certified instructor.

Equally aware of the need to keep up his education, Mr. West's latest accomplishment was the completion of a certificate course in leadership and management.

Over the years, he also successfully completed other professional development including middle management training, K-9 drug detection, advanced narcotic interdiction training, firearms training, and tactical self defence.

He has also completed training in goods scanning safety and operation, something that has benefitted the container scanning operation, a unit that he presently heads.

In fact, Mr. West was one of the team leaders selected to operate the scanning system from the inception of the unit that prescreens containers for contraband including firearms and ammunition.

Known in the service for providing strong support to teammates and juniors, Mr. West strongly believes officers should lead by example. His staff have rewarded his efforts with their wholehearted support.

Commented the Collector of Customs, Mr. Charles Clifford: "I am very pleased to welcome Assistant Collector Philip West to my management team and look forward to working with him to further the national security of our country."

In response, Mr. West stated: "After 24 years with the H.M. Customs, I am humbled and delighted to be given the opportunity to serve my department and my country in the capacity of Assistant Collector of Customs. I will continue to strive for excellence in service, while protecting our borders and safeguarding the government's revenue."

He has some hard-won advice for young Caymanians looking to serve the country: "Never give up! This was my second time applying for the ACC position and this time, seven persons had applied. Work hard and your worth will be noticed and appreciated. Make sure you make the most of the educational opportunities you receive and give that your best shot! Your parents, your country, and most of all you yourself, deserve no less!"
