International Firefighters Day

CI Fire Service officers are led in prayers by Fireman Shimar Harding (second from left) after they offered a minute's silence for all fallen firefighters at Fire Service headquarters on Owen Roberts Drive to mark International Firefighters Day Wednesday, 4 May 2016.

Cayman Islands Fire Service personnel gathered at their headquarters on Owen Roberts Drive to offer a minute's silence for fallen firefighters the world over, and to pray for the welfare of hardworking firemen and women on International Firefighters Day Wednesday, 4 May 2016.

The day also provided an opportunity to acknowledge the sacrifices that firefighters make, and offer heartfelt thanks for the invaluable service they provide communities everywhere and in the Cayman Islands.

Historically, International Firefighters Day pays homage to Saint Florian, a Roman era firefighter and the patron saint of firefighters, explained Chief Fire Officer David Hails.

Meanwhile the Home Affairs Ministry's Assistant Chief Officer Michael Ebanks expressed the community's deep gratitude for Cayman Islands firefighers' service, and their distinctive characteristics of courage, sacrifice, determination and selflessness.

Human Resources Manager Clara Smith, whose unit organised the event, added: "You are appreciated and valued!"

Fireman Shimar Harding, who is the new Designate Fire Service Chaplain, led the opening prayer.
