Foundational Business Communication

What is this course? 

Foundational Business Communication (FBC) is aimed at providing learners with the essential skills and practices necessary for effective communication in the workplace. The course focuses on implementing fundamentals of written and oral communication in real business situations with an emphasis on reading, analyzing and writing business communications in English. This FBC course is offered at an intermediate and advance level. A pre- assessment is done to determine level placement. The course runs for a total duration of 20 weeks. Various independent and in class assessments are also given and there is a portfolio submission requirement. Successful candidates receive Foundational Business Communication Certificate. The programme is assured by City & Guilds.

Course Objectives: 

  1. Understand business communication concepts that serve as the basis for effective spoken and written communication in a business setting. 
  1. Develop the fundamental skills of business communication techniques and the ability to be effective in writing business documents. 
  1. Learn to use standard formats, techniques and documents effectively in business settings. 

 
Who is this course for? 

This course is intended for civil servants who: 

  • are seeking to improve their foundational communication skills 
  • do a significant amount of reading and writing in their current role 
  • desire to become more proficient in formatting business correspondences 
  • desire to become more proficient in writing research papers and course related assignments 
  • desire to enroll in any Civil Service College course where effective writing is essential
  • are seeking an assured programme to demonstrate their proficiency in business communication 

Is funding available? 

The Civil Service College funds this course on the understanding that you are fully committed to achieving the learning outcomes. Your commitment is demonstrated by attending all sessions provided. Therefore if more than one session is missed, candidate funding may be withheld. 

 

What is the commitment? 

The course will be offered on Thursdays, starting on 1st May 2025. Time to be announced. It will run for 20 weeks in total. There will be a break in July, with classes resuming in August, 2025.

The course features face to face learning and a combination of written and digital assignments. It is predominantly hosted on the Microsoft Teams Classroom platform, where course materials, grading, feedback and communication with facilitator can be accessed. Weekly classes are held at the CSC training rooms at the Government building.

  • When registration is open, in the first instance, it is recommended that you have a chat with your manager to discuss your interest in taking this course and obtain their support (particularly if work scheduling may conflict with planned attendance).
