The Basic Food Handlers’ training is geared at equipping food-handling personnel throughout these islands with pertinent knowledge of handling, preparing, and delivering food safely, thereby preventing consumers from contracting food-borne illness and disease.
The training offered covers topics such as bacteriology, cleaning/sanitization, personal hygiene, temperature control, cross-contamination, food storage practices, food preparation, pest identification and control, food premise construction and design. It applies to new personnel working in the food industry and anyone wishing to continue as food handlers after the expiration of certificates issued by the DEH, which are valid for three years.
The DEH requires all personnel involved in the preparation of food for public consumption to be trained. Therefore, food business owners are encouraged to register their employees to attend one of these important workshops. Persons who are currently unemployed and who are desirous to be trained and certified in food hygiene and safety should also call to make arrangements to attend.
A registration cost of $15 per person covers all materials and fees should be paid at DEH headquarters, located at 580 North Sound Road, between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.
