In collaboration with energy consultants, Econoler, the Ministry of Sustainability & Climate Resiliency and Wellness, has developed guidelines and data-driven strategies to support and ensure the effective implementation of energy efficiency measures in the residential sector and promote energy efficiency in new and existing buildings.
Why Energy Efficiency Building Practices Matter
The population of the Cayman Islands has grown by an estimated 23% since 2021, contributing to a significant increase in housing and living costs as well as higher overall demand for electricity and, in turn, increasing the need for additional electricity generation mostly supplied by diesel plants.
One of the most cost-effective and fastest ways to reduce climate-related risks in the long term, and household electricity costs in the near term, is to maximise the energy efficiency of new and existing buildings. This can be achieved by adopting more energy efficient building construction and retrofit practices by selecting energy efficient systems and equipment and promoting energy conservation behaviours and habits among building occupants.
The Energy Efficiency Guidelines provide a closer look at how energy-efficient buildings and construction practices can help to address climate challenges and increase sustainability in the Cayman Islands.
The Ministry held online training sessions specifically for developers, suppliers and architect on 20 and 27 March, 2025. The training was held over two sessions, the first focussed on residential constructions, while the second was aimed at appliance retailers and centred on how to explain
and sell energy efficiency. These sessions are now available for you to view and download.
