On 6 February 1952, 70 years ago, Princess Elizabeth acceded to the throne becoming Queen Elizabeth II and beginning her now seven decades of service to the UK, its territories and the Commonwealth. As a result, The Queen is the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee.
In honour of this remarkable moment in Her Majesty The Queen's extraordinary reign, which has been dedicated to people far beyond the UK's shores, the Cayman Islands Government launched a number of activities beginning in early February and culminated in an extended Platinum Jubilee Weekend celebration from 2-6 June, 2022. These events brought our community together for this incredible milestone while raising awareness of our strong historical ties with the United Kingdom.
The Cayman Islands Government will join the United Kingdom, other Overseas Territories and The Commonwealth in celebrating Her Majesty the Queen over the long weekend, 2 - 6 June 2022.
While festivities began earlier this year, local officials have scheduled several fun, family-friendly events over the long weekend, which includes public holidays to mark: The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee (Friday, 3 June) and her official birthday (Monday, 6 June).
Over the last 70 years, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has accomplish several remarkable historical milestones.
The Queen, who in 2015 became the longest ruling British Monarch in history, is also the most widely traveled. Her many historic overseas visits, including two to the Cayman Islands in 1983 and 1994, have made her a well-loved figurehead throughout the Commonwealth. Despite times of unprecedented social change, this popularity has proved lasting.
The Queen’s embrace of a public service ethos as a critical element to her work has been one reason for her popularity. She remains associated with hundreds of charities that cover a wide range of issues, from opportunities for young people, to the preservation of wildlife and the environment.
Furthermore, through the award of twice-yearly Queen’s Honours, The Queen recognises and celebrates persons in Great Britain and around the Commonwealth who have made a significant impact through their contributions to the world.
