Terms of Reference
Concerns were raised in the Legislative Assembly in May 2007 regarding the perceived high costs of legal aid in the Islands. The legislators were also concerned that foreign attorneys were conducting too many legal aid cases. As a result the Attorney General requested that the Commission conduct a review of the legal aid system with a view to making recommendations for reform. A substantive review of the legal aid system was carried out in between October 2005 and February 2008. The Commission recommended various changes to the relevant administrative processes but was of the view that the system offered good value for money.
Outcomes
A Legal Aid Bill, 2012 was submitted by the Cabinet for public comment but has not yet been passed.
