At the Mosquito Research & Control Unit (MRCU), our mission is to protect the health and well-being of the Cayman Islands by developing and implementing the most effective, sustainable, and environmentally responsible mosquito control methods available.
We are dedicated to advancing research that improves existing control methods and evaluates new technologies. With a focus on mosquito biology and innovative insecticide application, our team works to ensure that the products we use are both effective and environmentally safe. Routine studies are conducted to monitor insecticide resistance, ensuring that control products continue to work efficiently while minimizing environmental impact.
In recent years, MRCU has transitioned from using organo-phosphate chemicals to more bio-rational products targeting mosquito larvae, which are safer and more sustainable. We continue to explore and integrate new technologies, such as Wide Area Larviciding with aircraft and ground-based "Buffalo Turbine" units, to enhance our ability to manage mosquito populations on a large scale.
Our commitment to continuous improvement ensures that we are always exploring the most cutting-edge, scientifically proven methods to control mosquitoes and protect the public from mosquito-borne diseases.
