There are approximately 36 reported species of mosquitoes in the Cayman Islands, but 18 of them are more commonly found.
To help control mosquito populations, we place specialised traps in key locations across all three islands. These traps are checked daily.
By analysing the number and type of mosquitoes caught in each trap, we can detect population spikes and identify areas of concern. This data helps us determine where and when to take action to keep mosquito numbers low.
For mosquitoes that breed around homes, our teams inspect properties and record their findings in a central database. This information is critical in guiding our control efforts and allows us to focus resources where they are needed most.
Daily monitoring is one of the most important tools we use to protect our communities and reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases and nuisance.
