The National Tree Planting Programme was initially launched in 2022 as part of the Cayman Islands Government’s year-long schedule of events and initiatives to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
The Programme's initial goal was to plant 70 trees in each constituency, of which 70 will be Mahogany (Swietenia mahagoni) trees across all three islands as a living legacy that honours the Queen’s leadership and benefits future generations.
Following the success of this initiative, the Ministry of Sustainability & Climate Resiliency decided to continue planting trees as part of a national programme.
The mission of the National Tree Planting Programme is to plant, nurture, and protect native and culturally significant trees across the Cayman Islands. The programme’s long-term goal is to protect biodiversity and develop a society that has a positive relationship with trees. This work will be carried out through the following objectives:
1. PLANT – Promote the importance of, and create demand for, native trees and fruit trees through yearly tree planting events and public engagement initiatives.
2. NURTURE – Promote the importance of healthy soils by facilitating composting opportunities.
3. PROTECT – Support the retention of trees through policy.
The National Tree Planting Programme features large-scale planting projects (20 or more trees at one location), small-scale planting projects (10-20 trees at one location) and a variety of public engagement initiatives, such as plant giveaways and webinars.

The Ministry of Sustainability & Climate Resiliency was originally established following the 2021 General Election. After the 2025 General Election, the Ministry became the Ministry of Health, Environment & Sustainability.
The Ministry's mission is to cultivate a lasting legacy of sustainability in the Cayman Islands, by achieving environmental, social, and economic balance, with a view to maximising benefits across all three areas of this triple bottom line to make the lives of current and future generations better.
Priorities include addressing the existential threats posed by climate change through an updated national Climate Change Policy; supporting the transition to renewable energy through the National Energy Policy and programmes designed to save energy and reduce cost of living; maintaining and enhancing the ecosystem services provided by our unique natural environments; and facilitating the development of a framework to enable holistic, balanced decision-making across the three pillars of sustainable development.
