Landfill Fire Update – Major Incident Downgraded
The public is advised that the fire at the George Town Landfill has been formally downgraded from a Major Incident. The emergency is now being managed as a Critical Incident under the operational command of the Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS), with on-scene management continuing to be led by CIFS personnel.

Immigration Legislation & Regulations Commence 1 May 2026
Cabinet has approved the commencement orders for amendments to the Act, following their passage in Parliament in December 2025 and March 2026. The amendments will come into force on 1 May, alongside the approval of the accompanying Regulations which are now published and available to the public.
Landfill Fire - Traffic and CIFS Update
Fire crews remain actively engaged at the George Town Landfill fire and continue to make steady progress. There are currently no visible flames at the top of the landfill mound, with firefighting efforts now focused on identified hot spots.
Welfare Checks for Communities Impacted by Fire Underway
Starting this afternoon, multi-agency teams from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, the Cayman Islands Regiment, and the Health Services Authoritywill be conducting welfare checks for residents of communities directly impacted by the landfill fire that started on Thursday, 16 April.
Landfill Fire - Agencies Continue Response and Community Support Measures
The Cayman Islands Fire Service can confirm that the landfill fire is currently under control. However, challenges with equipment and intermittent smoke cover affecting visibility have slowed extinguishment efforts.

As of 11:00 p.m. this evening, the Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) is making steady progress in the containment efforts of the landfill fire, with continued suppression and hot-spot monitoring.
Landfill Fire – Update on Containment Efforts
The Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) is actively working on the containment of the fire at the George Town landfill and is extinguishing all small spot fires that may occur. The fire was initially reported in one of the active fill areas facing the Esterly Tibbetts Highway.
